The Foundation is pleased to call for Applications for 2023 Grants from complying organisations in our catchment area.

To qualify for consideration for a grant the applying organisation must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a not for profit organisation.
  • The project must fall within the geographical boundaries of the AB&DHF. The district can be regarded generally as extending approximately from Wye River through Apollo Bay to Lavers Hill and from the coast to the line drawn from Lavers Hill to Forrest.
  • Must fall within the charter of activities supported by the Foundation.

Important Note: When reviewing grants we give precedence to grant applications which have health outcomes as the primary objective – not as a secondary by-product of a project which has a primary objective other than health.

Detailed grant applications must be submitted by the closing date of Monday 15th May, 2023. Applications must be made on the AB&DHF Grant Application form supported by a detailed project description and costing.

2019 Annual General Meeting

We cordially invite everyone to join us at Captains at the Bay for our AGM followed by refreshments.

We will be presenting and acknowledging Grants totalling $59,168 for the year ended 30 June 2019.

We will also be acknowledging the distribution of $34,900 made to organisations who made a significant contribution to the successful Great Ocean Road Running Festival in May this year.

Our Grants, including funding of new projects within our district, would not be possible without the support of our Members and the generous bequests left to the Health Foundation. We encourage everyone to consider making a bequest to the Apollo Bay and District Health Foundation to enable us to continue supporting the community, now and in the future.

We are also very pleased to advise that our Guest speaker this year is Brian Humphries. Brian will give an update on the progress of the new Aquatic Centre for which the Health Foundation is a major donor.

20th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday 15th June the Apollo Bay & District Health Foundation hosted a celebration at the Apollo Bay Surf Life Saving Club to acknowledge the contributions the foundation has made to the community and thank community members for their support over the last 20 years. Here’s some more information about the Foundation and how it ultimately has helped the community help itself.

Why the celebration?

The celebration recognises the long-term nature of the Foundation. 20 years of raising funds to assist Otway Health and similar health-related organisations to provide services for the good health and well-being of the communities of Apollo Bay and surrounding districts.

Why and how was the Foundation founded?

In 1998, the Board of Otway Health & Community Services (OHCS) sought to have established an ongoing process to meet its future capital requirements. This resulted in a Community meeting being held to investigate the establishment of an independent foundation to raise funds in support of the aims of OHCS.  Judith Kennedy, Les Noseda, Frank Shields (Otway Health President) and Ron Clark initiated the meeting which was chaired by Judith.

The Community agreed to the establishment of a Foundation and a Steering Committee was formed.  Members of the Committee were: Les Noseda (OHCS Board Member), Peter Vickery QC, Chris White, Geoff Learey, John Gilbert (Lawyer), John Spencer, Stuart Holbery (Lawyer), John Hellyar, Mike Ferey, Dianne Clark, Wendy Dwyer, Andrew Buchanan, and Bill Flynn.

Keith Leorke made the initial gift of $100 to enable the start-up of the Foundation.

The initial Deed and Statement of Purposes was drafted by the lawyers Peter Vickery QC, John Gilbert and Stuart Holbery. The Foundation subsequently gained exemption as a Charitable Organisation on May 20, 1999.

Recognition of Bequests and other Contributors

Perc Murray, John Hellyer, Murray Champion and Les Noseda are acknowledged for substantial bequests made in their wills. Many thanks are also extended to the many contributors to the Foundation, in particular the Governors of the Foundation.

Foundation Achievements

The purchase of the freehold in October 2004 of the shop that is rented to Otway Health for the Opportunity Shop.

Accumulated Members’ Equity amounting to $1.2 Million.

Collaboration with Otway Health.

Annual Grants Program

Since 2000 almost $350,000 has been given out in our Annual Grants program to a number of local community groups and organisations for health related purposes, including:

Involvement in the Great Ocean Road Marathon/Running Festival

The festival provides opportunity for all not for profit organisations from Apollo Bay to Wye River to raise money by volunteering their time. We at the ABDHF bring the groups and people together! Since 2014 the we have been the Premier Charity for the Marathon/Running Festival and have been responsible for organising around 250 local volunteers and distributing funds raised back to the groups involved. Groups that have raised funds by providing volunteers over the last 6 years include:

Apollo Bay P-12 College ($114K+), Apollo Bay Preschool ($27K+), Apollo Bay Sailing Club ($23K+), Kennett River Progress Association ($20k), Wye River CFA, ($16K+), Wye River SLSC ($16K+), Apollo Bay U3A ($5K+), Apollo Bay CFA ($3K+)

Where to from here?

The Foundation has prepared a Strategic Plan for the next 3 years – the mission is to grow the Foundation for the benefit of the health of Communities of Apollo Bay and surrounding districts. The Plan is reviewed annually.

With the support of our Members and Community we look forward to the next 20 years of Service.

Lastly, a very big thank you to those who helped us deliver the anniversary on Saturday night. To Georgie and the Surf Club Committee for providing an excellent venue, to Mark and the team from Sandy Feet for their delicious catering, to Andrew Noseda for providing Prickly Moses tasty beers, to Mt Duneed Estate for the superb wines, to La Bimba for the outstanding cake and to Sarah McQuinn for the beautiful vocals.

ABDHF & GORRF – The Link

Fundraising is the link between the Apollo Bay & District Health Foundation (ABDHF) and The Great Ocean Road Running Festival. The festival provides opportunity for all non-for-profit organisations from Apollo Bay to Wye River to raise money by volunteering their time. We at the ABDHF bring the groups and people together!

We work closely all year with event management group, IMG, to ensure we can supply the number of volunteers required to make this event happen. These are the support people who stand by drink stations, the road marshals, the crowd control and the medal distributers. It is a big gig! As a community, we’ve committed to offer around 250 volunteers each year, and that’s what it takes to run an event with a magnitude of this size. Sincerely, the communities of Apollo Bay, Kennett River and Wye River, we applaud your efforts!

We also seek business supporters each year for the event. The Great Ocean Road Running Festival provides a strong economic return for local hospitality businesses and we are lucky enough to have received generous support over the past 6 years from many of them. When a business or individual assist the cause of the ABDHF, the funds raised stay in town.

The Apollo Bay & District Health Foundation is extremely proud and excited to be the OFFICIAL CHARITY of the Great Ocean Road Running Festival for the sixth year and to be able to provide a direct benefit back to communities located along the race route.

Given continued cuts to government spending coupled with over 2.8 million visitors a year, our small communities must generate additional funding to maintain and improve health services for locals and visitors alike.

Since inception in 1999 the Health Foundation have distributed over $350,000 in grants to the local community and over $200,000 has been distributed from the Great Ocean Road Marathon/Running Festival in just 5 years. See here for full details.

2018 ABDHF Wrap Up

The 18th Annual General Meeting of the Foundation was held on 10th November 2018 at Captains at the Bay, and 30 members and supporters attended. Members were advised that Foundation grants to local organisations for the year were $43,712. The major grant was to Ambulance Victoria – Apollo Bay branch for $15,000 for cardiac arrest survival equipment. In addition, $10,000 was donated to Otway Health as a grant toward their reorganisation of GP facilities in Apollo Bay. A further grant of $10,000 was made to the Apollo Bay Community Pool project. The Foundation is the largest single donor to this programme with a three-year commitment of $30,000. $20,000 has been paid with a further $10,000 to be paid in July this year. The Foundation has since inception, distributed over $350,000 by way of grants to the community.

The Foundation is also the principal charity for the Great Ocean Road Running Festival and $34,000 was distributed this year to local organisations who provided volunteers for the event. Distributions to the community since the Foundation became the principal charity total $202,000.

At the Annual General Meeting the following Trustees were re-elected – Ian Manton (currently Chairman), John Curry and Andrew Gardiner.

At 30 June 2018 the Foundation had assets of nearly $1.2 million including ownership of the Second Sails Opportunity shop.

The guest speaker at the AGM was Inspector Trevor Cornwall, Ballarat Police Local Area Command, who spoke on drugs and alcohol and their negative impact on the health and well-being of the community. We are grateful to Duncan and Anna at Captains at the Bay for providing a great space for us to hold our AGM.

We are looking forward to the events for 2019; stay tuned for our 20 Year Anniversary celebration, music events and the 2019 GOR Running Festival on 18-19 May.
